Abstract

877,532. Exhaust-silencers. LEMMERMAN Inc., C. W. July 6, 1960, No. 23594/60. Class 7(2). [Also in Group XXVI] An aircraft gas turbine tail section acting as a silencer for exhaust gases comprises a housing 16, a plurality of axially extending elongate vibratory rods 22 fixed at each end to annular end rings 24, 26 and maintained under tension in a cylindrical array within and concentrically spaced inwardly of the housing, and a part-annular fret 34 mounted to engage a portion of the rods in a plane transverse to the housing axis, the fret being positioned transversely of the rods to divide them into axial portions isolated to vibrate independently. As shown, four spacers 28 are fixed between the two end-rings 24, 26, at equal circumferential intervals and an equal number of axially offset arcuate frets 34, 36, 46, 48 are attached to the spacers one fret being disposed between adjacent pairs of spacers. The frets are so positioned between the spacers that the fundamental frequency of one axial portion of the divided rods is a multiple of the fundamental frequency of the other portion. The rods are welded to a V-shaped inner ridge on members 24, 26 with the ends 30, 32 extending beyond the member 24, 26. These ends vibrate as clamped free bars at a very high frequency. The rods are preferably of stainless steel and of a diameter to vibrate at a frequency determined by the tension thereof. A diffuser (not shown) clamps to a flange 18.
