Abstract

877,281. Packages. PAPER SACKS Ltd. May 4, 1960 [May 27, 1959], No. 18025/59. Class 94(1). A method of baling articles or groups of articles comprises the steps of arranging the articles or groups into a series of courses 1, ... , 7 to form a stack with the articles in each course arranged to cover the joints between articles in the preceding course, compressing the stack and binding it into a unit by ties 10, the spacing of some of the articles being such that voids 3b or archways extending into, through or under the stack are formed to permit handling thereof by a fork-lift truck. Groups 1a, 1b, 2a, 3a of flattened paper bags the length of each of which is twice the width thereof, are arranged into courses and stacked as shown in Fig. 1. To increase the vertical dimension of the voids 3b two or more layers of groups 3a may be formed. If the width of each bag is considerably greater than half its length cardboard tubes may be substituted for the two outer groups 3a to leave sufficiently large voids 3b. In a modification, Fig. 3, two layers of groups 11a form archways 20 extending beneath the stack. In a further modification the groups are positioned so that the voids extend only part of the way into or under the stack. To prevent the articles being soiled inserts may be incorporated in the voids and wrapping paper provided at the top and bottom of the stack.
