Abstract

Olefins are hydrogenated by passing in the vapour phase with hydrogen at 100-300 p.s.i.g. and elevated temperature, e.g. 100-400 DEG C., over a complex catalyst prepared by depositing nickel, cobalt or iron in elemental or combined form on an amphoteric oxide, roasting at above 650 DEG C. and depositing a catalyst component of known hydrogenating activity, preferably platinum, indium, palladium, nickel, iron, cobalt, chromia or molybdena. The catalyst base containing the roasted amphoteric oxide with nickel, cobalt or iron may be extracted with acid; the preparation of the catalyst is described in Specifications 844,242, 844,243 and 863,852 [Group III]. The olefin may be ethylene, propylene, butenes, pentenes, hexenes, butadiene, diisobutylene, or propylene dimer, trimer and tetramer.
