Abstract
877,044. Pneumatic conveyers; hoppers. GENERAL AMERICAN TRANSPORTATION CORPORATION. March 21, 1960 [June 22, 1959], No. 9916/60. Class 78 (1). A hopper 20 for granular material, which may be stationary or form part of a hopper wagon, Fig. 10, has a bottom outlet structure 28 having a gravity discharge opening, which can be closed by a cover-plate, and also means for connecting it to a pneumatic discharge conduit 33. A valve 57, 58 is arranged in the structure 28 and when lowered prevents material from entering from the hopper. The valve consists of two plates, which are connected by a hinge 56, one of which is movable by rack-and-pinion mechanism. As the valve rises it enters a shield 67 and is protected from the action of the material. Wheels 73 mounted between the plates 57, 58 prevent them from being forced together by the weight of the material. Cams 74, 75 on the plates bear on fixed pins 76, 77 in the lowest position of the valve and force it into contact with its seating. A bridging tube 46, Fig. 11, can be used to connect either the parts 34, 35 or 34a, 35a when it is desired to isolate a particular hopper from the pneumatic conveying system.
