An electric arc furnace 1 is supplied by a secondary winding of a transformer whose primary winding 3 in series with a capacitor 6 is connected to one phase of a threephase supply RST, the other two phases being connected to an inductor 7 and capacitor 8. The values of inductance and capacitance are adjustable or arranged to give optimum power factor conditions.
