Abstract

876,610. Tube couplings. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Jan. 25, 1960 [Feb. 16, 1959], No. 2718/60. Class 99(1). A hollow washer 7 and an apertured element 8 located adjacent a recess surrounding an exhaust port 13 in a body member 6 have apertures therein of such a size as to receive a tube 11 passed therethrough and into the recess, and the washer is compressed by means, such as a cap 9 screwed on to the nipple 17 of the body, in such a manner as to deform and reduce the size of the aperture in the washer so that the latter engages the tube and thereby creates a vacuum-tight or pressure-tight seal between the tube and body. As shown in Fig. 3, the washer 7 is frusto-conical in form, and the end of the tube is received in a recess between the body and a bushing 18. The cap 9 and element 8 may be formed as a single integral member. In modifications (a) the nipple 17 is internally screw-threaded to receive a plug, within which the washer and element 8 may be slidably fitted, for deforming the washer, and (b) the cap 91, Fig. 5, is operated by a toggle clamping arrangement, and the bushing 18 is dispensed with.
