Abstract

The invention comprises metal complexes of dyes of formula:- <FORM:0876486/IV(c)/1> where R1 is a methyl, phenyl or diphenyl group, R2 is H, alkyl of 1-6 C atoms or phenyl and R3 is H, alkyl of 1-6 C atoms, cyclohexyl, benzyl, phenyl or naphthyl or R2 and R3 together with N from a morpholine residue, R1, R2 and R3 are free of SO3H groups, and the metal has an atomic weight of 55-64 inclusive. The dyes are made by conventional diazotization, coupling and metallization processes. Representative of specified coupling components are acetoacetic acid amide and N-dimethylamide and -morpholide, benzoylacetic acid 2, 5-dichloranilide, phenylbenzoylacetic acid naphthyl- (2)-amide, acetoacetyl- N-methylaminobenzene and acetoacetylamino- 4-carboxybenzene. Specified metals are copper, cobalt, nickel and iron. The dyes colour anodically oxidized aluminium in yellow shades. Examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes and their use in colouring anodically oxidized aluminium.
