Abstract

An elastic, non-cellular rubber-like composition, which will undergo a relatively small increase in volume when immersed in ester-base lubricants and negligible loss of volume when immersed in mineral oils, comprises essentially a butadiene-acrylonitrile co-polymer and a proportion of polyethylene constituting 5%-15%, preferably 10%-15%, of the total weight of the copolymer and polyethylene. The molecular weight of the polyethylene preferably exceeds 20,000. In preparing mixes, polyethylene powder may be blended with softened nitrile rubber along with other compounding ingredients on a conventional two-roll mill at a temperature above the melting point of the polyethylene, or the polyethylene may be blended with part of the nitrile rubber, and the remaining nitrile rubber and other compounding ingredients are added after the blend has been allowed to stand for several hours. Examples are directed to compositions comprising butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers, polyethylene of molecular weights 2,000, 24,000, 32,000 and 45,000, respectively, lampblack and suitable curing agents; in some, there are employed furnace black for lampblack and dicumyl peroxide as the curing agent instead of the conventional sulphur system.
