Abstract
876,311. Uses of luminescence. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. March 9, 1959 [March 12, 1958], No. 7964/58. Class 39(1). A light source comprises a gas-tight container 1, Fig. 1, a #-radioactive gas within the container and a coating of phosphorescent material 3 on a major portion of the internal surface of the container, the container being light transparent at least over the remainder 6 of the surface, the arrangement being such as to concentrate the emitted light. The coating 3 is of sufficient thickness to absorb substantially a11 the #-radiation incident from the gas on to the coating. As shown in Fig. 3 the container comprises a body 21 having channels 22a, 22b, 22c and 22d defining readable characters, with coatings 23a, 23b, 23c and 23d, and a plane light transparent cover common to all the channels and forming a gas tight lid therefor, provision being made at 24 for admitting the gas, preferably krypton-85 into the common cavity.
