875,901. Powder wetting and blending. PATTERSON-KELLEY CO. Inc. June 4, 1959, No. 19118/59. Class 86 An apparatus for blending and mixing liquids with dry powdered solids which are not easily wetted comprises a V-shaped container having frusto-cylindrical side leg portions 10, 12 mounted for rotation on the trunions 25, 26 and driven by motor 29 through a reduction gear-box 30. The other motor 45 rotates, at a much higher speed than that of the container, the hollow shaft 40 carrying discs 46 and ribs 47 forming a cylindrical cage-like agitator which operates on the walls of the cylindrical cavity in the powder formed centrifugally by rotation of the container. Liquid is supplied by the pipe 36 to the interior of a pipe 60 concentric with shaft 40 and having apertures 62 midway thereof through which the liquid escapes into the annular chamber 66, and thence through apertures as at 64 into chambers 59. By centrifugal force the liquid is expressed through the interstices between parts of dies 53, 54 mounted obliquely on shaft 40 in swash-plate like manner. The discs 53, 54 may be replaced by a pair of hollow cylindrical hubs with obliquely extended flanges separated by a distance piece (Fig. 5, not shown), or by a plurality of discs forming an oblique cylinder (Fig. 6 not shown) or by a pair of complementary hollow frusto-cylinders, (Fig. 3, not shown). In the last modification the size of the liquid passage may be altered by relatively displacing the frusto-cylinders on the shaft 40; in the other cases by means of shims. Any of the liquid dispersion arrangements may be used with or without the cage-like agitator. Specifications 668,589 and 714,016 are referred to.
