[Also in Group XL (a)] In a nuclear reactor steam turbine marine power plant, a heat dissipative system is provided for use when a reduction of the propulsion power is required without a corresponding reduction of the reactor output. The dissipation is effected in hydraulic couplings of the turbine gear system and in an interstage steam cooler. As shown, the propeller shaft 35 is driven by the turbines 11, 80, 81 supplied with steam through pipe 10 from the reactor (not shown). The power from turbine 11 is transmitted through either ahead or astern hydraulic couplings 25, 26 and cooling of the steam passing from 11 to turbines 80, 81 may be effected in the air trunk 105 by air from fan 106 driven by 11. To dissipate large amounts of reactor power, clutch 24 is opened, a flow of liquid is maintained through both 25, 26, which operate in opposition, and is passed through a cooler while the air, forced through 105 and heated by the steam passing from 11 to 80, 81, is exhausted to the atmosphere. Under normal conditions, the clutch 24 is closed, the hydraulic couplings 25, 26 are inoperative, and the turbine 11 drives the shaft 35 through the gears 29, 30.
