Abstract

875,807. Magnetic compositions; magnets. BAERMANN, M. Feb. 4, 1958 [Feb. 9, 1957], No. 3687/58. Classes 35 and 38 (2). [Also in Groups XVIII, XXV and XXXVI] A flexible magnetic member 4, Figs. 1 and 2, comprises a mass of rubber or like elastic material having incorporated therein a powdered, permanent magnetic material, the member having a plurality of closely spaced magnetic poles the polarity of which alternates from pole to pole. The member 4 is attached to one leg 3 of an elastic seal for a door, cover or the like, preferably by a bevelled tongue and groove joint 5, the seal having holes 6 in the other leg 1 for fastening it to the door, cover or the like. and a base 2 of the seal is corrugated to provide resiliency. The poles may, as shown, extend longitudinally of the seal or transversely thereof. The member 4 is preferably made from powdered polyvinylchloride mixed with ground iron-barium-oxide or bismuth-manganese combined in the ratio of 40 to 60 by volume, the mixture being then plasticized and extruded through a nozzle of the required shape, the resultant strip being suitably magnetized. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), a door and a door frame both have co-operating magnetic members, that on the door frame being cushioned by a foam rubber backing strip. In applying the invention to a garment closure, Fig. 8, the edges of the garment are provided with interlocking magnetic members 14, 15 attached to the edges by fabric members 16, 17. In another embodiment an electrically conductive wire or cable is provided with a sheath, or part of a sheath, of flexible magnetic material.
