875,695. Digital electric-calculating apparatus. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 23, 1958 [Dec. 26, 1957], No. 41505/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 106 (1). A data transmission system for regulating the transfer of information between an addresssable storage device having a plurality of locations for the storage of information and a plurality of peripheral units operable in a synchronous modes with respect to each other and to the said storage device comprises a plurality of control units each connectable to a peripheral unit and operable to transfer information synchronously between such unit and said storage device in which each control unit includes means for requesting access to said storage device and said plurality of control units are adapted to co-operate to establish an order of transfer of information in accordance with a pattern of requests for access to said storage device. A data processing system comprising an I.B.M. 701 computer as described in Proc. I.R.E., Vol. 41, pages 1262-1294, but using a magnetic core matrix as described in Specification 850,322 in place of the original C.R.T. storage, magnetic tape units, recordcard readers, and printers together with a known input/output buffering system is described and in particular a system of priorities is described to determine which of a number of peripheral units (e.g. tape units, printers, card readers, &c.) is to be given access with the main store (the core matrix) of the computer when several of them simultaneously issue requests for access. The magnetic tape units use known double-gap reading/writing heads, together with an error detecting arrangement as described in Specification 875,694, which is referred to. In the system described a large number of peripheral units are connected to the computer via six data synchronizer units and which of the six data synchronizer units is given access to the computer is determined by a priority unit which functions according to the following rules: The six data synchronizer units DSU1-DSU6 are divided into two main groups DSU1-DSU3 and DSU4-DSU6 which are each divided into two sub-groups of one and two units respectively. If a request for access to the computer is made by a single data synchronizer unit then this unit is given immediate access. If requests for access to the computer are made simultaneously by two data synchronizer units, one being in each of the main groups, then that unit belonging to the group which last had access to the computer is given immediate access and the other unit has to wait. This system of priority-that the last set of units to have access is given priority in the event of subsequent simultaneous requests for access-is applied as between two sub-groups of the same main group and as between the units of the same sub-group. In this way in the event of any number of simultaneous requests there is a unique order in which they will be granted.
