Abstract

875,483. Overload release clutches. CAMPBELL & ISHERWOOD Ltd., and MEREDITH, J. Feb. 12, 1958 [Feb. 13, 1957], No. 4847/57. Class 80 (2). In an overload release clutch of the kind in which an axially slidable member 14, in helically splined engagement 13, 15 with axially fixed input and output members 12, 16 respectively, can, under overload, overcome with a snap action a spring-loaded ball arrangement 22, 23 to move axially left and break the splined drive connection 15 with the output member 16 only, resetting means comprise a pawl 28 on the member 14 permanently engaging an output mounted ratchet 33 to prevent backward movement of the member 14 relative to the load whilst the input member 12 is rotated backwards by a pawl-carrying handlever (not shown) engaged with an input mounted ratchet 31. The backward input rotation acts through the helical spline 13 to move the member 14 axially back to the right to re-engage the output helical splines 15. The ratchet ring 33 is helically splined on the output member to turn and slide with the member 14. The torque-supporting loading of the axially movable member 14 comprises an adjustably spring-loaded centre ball 23 engaging outer balls 22 bearing in a chamfer 21 in the member 14 to produce the required snap disengagement. The leftward movement of the centre ball 23 moves left a rod 38 which engages an offset bore in a member 35 to pivot the latter which operates a switch 32 which may control an alarm or may serve as a relay for stopping the driving motor. The input member 12 is secured to a driving sprocket 10 and the output 16 to a shaft 11 driving a winch. Specifications 636,404 and 733,742 are referred to.
