Strip coiling apparatus includes a rotatable reel on which strip is to be coiled, at least one strip guiding roll arranged adjacent the reel periphery and displaceable away therefrom, means for withdrawing said roll from its strip coiling position and connected to means carrying said roll, and resilient means interposed between said roll and its carrying means, whereby at the instant the point of overlap is engaged by said roll the roll will be displaced momentarily away from the reel and relative to said roll carrying means and thereafter during completion of said each successive wrap the roll will assume its initial position with respect to its carrying means. Strip from a rolling mill is directed by rolls 21, 22 and an inclined guide 16 to a rotated reel 15. Wrapper frames 23 pivoted at 24 to machine side frames 12 are located at diametrically opposite sides of the reel 15 and carry a driven wrapper roll 25 and a curved strip guide 26. The frames 23 are swung into their operative position by constant pressure piston and cylinder means 28 an adjustable stop 33 on rod 31 on each frame limiting its movement towards the reel 15. A bottom section 18 of the lower end of the guide 16 is fixed to the left-hand frame 23 and a top section 19 of the guide 16 is pivotable about a shaft 36 and is linked at 37 to the right-hand frame 23. At the bottom of the coiler a crimping roll 39 on a pivoted arm 41 is moved by piston and cylinder means 43 to press the last wrap of the strip firmly against the reel. Each roll 25 is mounted at its ends in brackets 44, pivoted at 45 to the frame 23, and each connected at 48 to a clevis 47 on a shaft 51. A spring 52 around the shaft 51 presses on the clevis 47 and on a nut 55 screwed in a chuck 56 secured to the frame 23. A washer 62 and nut 63 on the shaft 51 abut the outer end of the nut 55. To increase the spring pressure the nut 55 is rotated to compress the spring 52 and the nut 63 is then tightened up. A projection 65 on the bracket 44 engages a stop 66 on the frame 23. Each roll 25 is pushed away from the reel by the point of overlap of strip thereon to compress its spring 52 and during the completion of a wrap and before the overlap again passes under that roll, the spring 52 overcomes the constant pressure of the means 28 so that the frame 23 gradually moves away from the reel until the roll 25 is in its original position relative to the frame 23. In a modification, Fig. 5, two rolls 72, 73 are slidable against springs 76 in a frame 74 retracted by piston and cylinder means 78 through bell crank means.
