Abstract
875,330. Delivering cigarettes and cigarette filters in orderly arrangement. MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. Feb. 9, 1960 [Feb. 10, 1959], No. 4611/59. Class 130. A helically grooved wheel 3, Figs. 1 and 8, having suction ports 4 and mounted above the rod line of a continuous-rod machine downstream of the cut-off point C.O. grips and accelerates cigarettes (or filters) C<SP>1</SP> supported on a plate 2 to space them axially. As shown, the wheel 3 has a three-start helix and rotates with a peripheral speed 10% greater than the rod speed around a stationary suction chamber 33 which is slightly eccentrically mounted so as to effectively contact the wheel only at its operative portion. The wheel 3 moves cigarettes slightly aside from the rod line and delivers them to a rotary suction drum 6 alternate receiving flutes of which have dome-headed central and end stops 8, 9 and which delivers the cigarettes in two rows to a catcher band 7. A stop 25 prevents the rear end of a cigarette from moving sideways until it has cleared the succeeding cigarette. The cigarettes are braked in the drum flutes by suction, the drum 6 being formed with suction ports and with a circumferentially adjustable suction chamber similarly mounted to that of the wheel 3, and/or by brushes, spring-pressed pads or springs 35, Fig. 7, which are mounted by a clamp 36 and a rebound-restraining peg 37 on holders 21, 22 which are adjustable axially and circumferentially of the drum 6 and may be unitary with a guide 29 for the drum or separate. The suction may be stronger in the flutes having central stops than in the others, which are made slightly deeper to avoid the holder 21 and the suction ports of which are in the drum half adjacent the stops 9. In a modification the wheel 3 delivers cigarettes to a catcher band directly in one row or, if a cam-controlled brake is used to regulate the braking pressure for alternate cigarettes, two rows.
