Class 100(4) A long-feed device for a typewriter or like book-keeping machine is controlled by markings on the strip 67 and the strip feeding means are disposed on the outgoing side of the platen and have no mechanical connection thereto. The zig-zag folded strip 67 is supplied from a container 36 consisting of two cage elements 37, 38, Fig. 3, mounted for axial displacement on shafts 39, 40, and led past a feeler 54 associated with a switch 53, Fig. 1. The strip is held down by two felt pads 57, 58 having recesses 57a for the feeler when it senses a hole 67a in the strip. From the sensing device, the strip 67 is drawn round the platen by feed rollers 5, 6, belt driven from an electric motor and delivered into container 41 consisting also of two cage elements mounted on transverse shafts 42, 43. In the initial threading of the strip 67 the pads 57, 58 are lifted by lever 64 and a front paper feed device comprising rollers 72 on forked supports 71 is moved by actuating lever 75, crank lever 78 from the position in Fig. 2 (not shown) to the position shown in Fig. 1. The feed rollers 5 and 6 are raised by arm 17 from a knob on the side plate 1. In operation the front platen rollers 72 and arm 75 are moved to open position, Fig. 1, either manually or from a machine control. This action also causes mechanism 85, 86, 89, 32, 30 and 29 to close switch contacts 28. Provided the main switch 75 is closed the motor 4 now drives the rollers 5, 6 until a hole 67a is sensed by the feeler 54a, whereupon a switch 53 closes; this operates a relay 27, contacts h 1 open, and the motor stops. Due to the small time-difference between the feeling action and the stopping of motor, the strip moves on a little so that the hole 67a has moved clear of feeler 54a, and contact 53 is open. Relay 27 is held by contact h 2 until contacts 27 are opened by the front platen roller actuating arm 75. Typing can now be carried out. Letter-spacing is effected by a pawl and ratchet wheel associated with the platen and the strip accumulates between the platen and the rollers 5, 6 and is taken up by the rollers when the arm 75 again is operated to open the front-feed rollers 72.
