Abstract

Thermoplastic resinous compositions are prepared by continuously blending a solution of a homopolymer, or a copolymer with a major proportion, of a monovinyl compound of formula: <FORM:0874805/IV (a)/1> where X is an alkyl radical with 1-4 carbon atoms and n is 0, 1 or 2, with a solution or dispersion of a natural rubber or a rubbery polymer or copolymer, and devolatilizing and extruding and thereby blending the mixture at between 110 DEG -245 DEG C. at an absolute pressure of 5-200 millitres of mercury for a period less than about 5 minutes. Styrene, o-, m-, and p-methyl styrenes, dimethyl styrene, ethylvinyl and diethylvinyl benzenes and copolymers with one or more of acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, a -methyl styrene, methyl isopropenyl ketone, ethyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate are examples of the hard resinous polymer and styrene-butadiene, butadiene-acylonitrile, neoprene, butyl, silicone, polyacrylate, pyridine-butadiene and chlorosulphonated polyethylene rubbers and natural rubber of the rubbery elastomer. The solvent may be toluene or xylene or the monomer from which the major proportion of the hard resinous component is derived, and the solution may be prepared by incomplete polymerization. The preferred devolatilizer-extruder employs two vacuum sections, followed by a section at atmospheric pressure in which modifiers, plasticizers, lubricants, and colourants such as stearic acid, zinc stearate, n-butyl stearate dibutyl phthalate, dioctyldiphenyl ether, mineral and vegetable oils, natural and synthetic hydrocarbons, and liquid polymers of unsaturated alkenyl aromatic hydrocarbons are incorporated.
