874.181. Deoxidizing molten metal: alloying. MANNESMANN A. G. Aug. 13, 1959 [Oct. 28, 1958], No. 27733/59. Classes 72 and 82(1) A method of introducing deoxidizing agents or alloying elements into molten metal comprises arranging a container, formed at least partly of a material capable of being melted by the molten metal and containing the material to be added, in an empty vessel in such a manner, that as the molten metal ascends it surrounds the container and melts it at least in part and allows the material contained therein to be dissolved in the molten metal As shown, a ladle 2 has a container 12, filled with a deoxidizing agent, e.g. aluminium, suspended from a bracket 8 by a rod 10 adjustable in height. Some deoxidizing agent may be added to the bottom of the ladle before pouring starts, the remainder being introduced when the molten metal rises to the height of the container, the bottom of which may be of wire mesh. Holes 14 may be provided in the top of the container for the escape of gases and the bracket 8 may be supported on a peripheral ring 6 of the ladle. More than one container may be provided and each may contain a different additive.
