[Also in Group XXXIV] In a machine-tool with an automatic-setting- control for accurately positioning and clamping the table and cross-slide, the work-table 15, Fig. 2, is supported by rollers 27, 31, 46, held in guideways in a cross-slide 18 by cages 28, 32, 47 and retaining-bars 26, 30. The rollers 27, 31 run on V-guides 23, 22 of the cross-slide and rollers 46 on a flat guide 45, the guides being protected by guards 34, 35, 55 secured to the slide and strips 57, 43 attached to the sides of the table. The end of each guide is protected by a spring-strip 36, Fig. 6, attached to the carriage and guided by a rod 38 on the slide to form a coil 37 which is cleaned by a felt-block 141 on a frame 41 pivoted at 42, a counterweight 142 keeping the block in contact with the strip. Telescopic sheet-metal guards 44, Fig. 1, protect the slides 22, 23 and 45. The slide 18 is mounted on similar roller-guides 16, 17, Fig. 1, on the machine-bed 11, these being repeated at the opposite-side of the bed, the guides 16 each having one side only of the Vee. The table and slide are moved to pre-selected positions by ball-bearing lead-screws, driven by electric-motors stopped electronically when a signal from a measuring-device associated with each guide-way is given to an electronic control, this control may be set manually with the aid of an indicating-panel 20 or by punched-cards or punched or magnetic-tape. Simultaneously with the stoppage of the table and slide, a clamping device which acts without affecting the setting, is actuated by the electronic-control. For the table and slide, a metal strip 62, Fig. 2, is attached to the slide and runs between long strips 59, 60 attached to the table, the strips being clamped together by wedges 69 acting through ball-bearings 71. The wedges are actuated by opposed pairs of hydraulic cylinders 72, 73, Fig. 8, or by springs or solenoids.
