Abstract
The invention comprises substituted pyrrolidinols of the general formula <FORM:0873303/IV (b)/1> (wherein R1 represents a C1-C5 alkyl or alkoxy group, R2 a hydrogen atom or a C1-C5 alkyl group, R3 a C1-C5 alkyl, phenyl, tolyl, benzyl, chlorophenyl, anisyl, benzyloxyphenyl or thienyl group, and R4 a hydrogen atom or a C1-C5 alkyl or phenyl group), and the preparation thereof by reacting a 3-pyrrolidone of the general formula <FORM:0873303/IV (b)/2> with a Grignard reagent R3MgX (wherein X represents a halogen atom) and hydrolysing the resulting complex. The products are useful as hypnotics (see Group VI). 3-Pyrrolidones of the second general formula above are prepared by processes illustrated by the following reaction schemes (A) (wherein R6 has the meanings given for R1 above) and (B):- <FORM:0873303/IV (b)/3> <FORM:0873303/IV (b)/4> The preparation of certain of the starting materials for (A) is described.ALSO:As hypnotics may be employed substituted pyrrolidinols of the general formula <FORM:0873303/VI/1> wherein R1 represents a C1-5 alkyl or alkoxy group, R2 a hydrogen atom or a C1-5 alkyl group, R3 a C1-5 alkyl, phenyl, tolyl, benzyl, chlorophenyl, anisyl, benzyloxyphenyl, or thienyl group, and R4 a hydrogen atom or a C1-5 alkyl or phenyl group. They may be administered orally in the form of tablets, wafers or capsules.
