Abstract

Olefins containing at least six but not more than twenty-five carbon atoms in the molecule are polymerized using a Ziegler type catalyst and are then treated with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst. The olefin may be obtained from the thermal or catalytic cracking of hydrocarbon feedstock or from the cracking of the raffinate of furfural extraction of heavy catalytically cracked cycle oil or may be produced from propylene, butylene or their mixtures. The olefin is preferably purified by treatment before polymerization with one of the catalyst components, or with sulphuric acid, or with urea and further with silica gel. The polymerization is preferably carried out in the usual inert solvents, in an inert atmosphere. The treatment with hydrogen may be carried out in the presence of powdered nickel, copper chromite, cobalt molybdate, molybdenum sulphide, Raney cobalt, nickel oxide on majolica, copper chromite on majolica, palladized charcoal, or, preferably Raney nickel. The products may be added to such synthetic lubricating oils as organic ester, e.g. di-(2-ethyl-hexyl) adipate, dioctyl phthalate and tricresyl phosphate. Specifications 799,392, 799,823, 801,031, 810,023, 819,867, 820,263, 824,460, 851,112, 851,113, 851,119, 873,064 and 873,065 are referred to.ALSO:A lubricating oil composition comprises a mineral or synthetic lubricating oil and a hydrocarbon polymer obtained by polymerizing a C6-C25 olefin with the aid of a Ziegler catalyst and then hydrogenating the polymerization product (see Group IV(a)). Synthetic lubricating oils mentioned are copolymers of alkylene glycols and alkylene oxides, polymeric tetrahydrofuran, polyalkyl silicone polymers and esters such as di(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate, dinonyl sebacate, dinonyl adipate, dioctyl phthalate and tricetyl phosphate. The composition may contain additional ingredients such as pour point depressors or viscosity index improvers (e.g. polymerized esters of acrylic acid or of 2-alkylacrylic acids), thickeners, antioxidants (e.g. alkylated phenols, diphenols and phenothiazine or its alkyl or aralkyl substitution products), anti-corrosive agents, anti-lacquering agents (e.g. metal phenates, metal naphthenates and metal salts of aromatic carboxlic acids such as benzoic acid and alkylated salicylic acids) and extreme pressure additives (e.g. trialkyl, triaryl or trialkaryl phosphates). The hydrogenated polymers themselves may be employed as lubricating oils and may be blended with any of the additional ingredients mentioned above. In the examples, lubricating compositions are described consisting of (a) hydrogenated polymer derived from C9, C10 or C8-C10 cracked wax olefins and 10-benzyl phenothiazine or (b) hydrogenated polymer derived from C9 or C10 cracked wax olefins and mineral oil (ionol also being optionally added as an antioxidant in the case of the composition containing hydrogenated polymer derived from C9 olefins).
