Abstract

872,922. Flocking machines. EAGLE-PICHER CO. March 4, 1960, No. 7770/60. Class 93. [Also in Group XXX] A flocking machine wherein articles are coated with adhesive and showered with flock while mechanically vibrated comprises a conveyer belt having a longitudinal groove receiving and gripping the articles, a vibrating table below the belt adapted to vibrate the belt as it moves across, and flock delivering means located above the table. As shown in Fig. 6, the conveyer belt 2 is of rubber and has a shallow U-shaped crosssection with inturned lip portions 3, 4 and an embedded metal strip 5. A- strip of antifriction fabric 6 is bonded to the underside of the belt. The belt 2 passes round pulleys 7 and 8, Fig. 1, at the ends of a flat deck 1, and is driven by gearing from an electric motor 9. A take-off conveyer transports the flocked work into a curing oven 15, and precuring may be effected by the infra-red lamps 40. The pulley 7 is adjustable by means 16 to tension the belt 2. In a central interruption of the deck 1 is disposed a table 17 mounted on leaf springs 18 (not shown), 19 secured at one end to stand 20. The table is also supported by pivoted links 21, 22, the eccentric end 23 of. a shaft carrying drive pulley 25 driven by belt 26 from electric motor 27 fitting in the lower end of link 22. An enclosure 28 surrounds table 17 with provision for the passage of belt 2 therethrough, a hopper 29 delivering flock to the enclosure 28. A belt spreader 38 facilitates introduction of the work into the conveyer belt groove, and a release shoe 39 disengages it at the other end. A spray gun 41 sprays rubber cement or other adhesive on to the work, baffles 42, 43 preventing too wide dispersion of the adhesive and flock towards each other. Beneath gun 41, the belt 2 passes under lower lateral guards 44, 45, Fig. 7, side members 46, .47 having sloping flange portions 48, 49 also being provided to protect the belt 2 from the adhesive spray. In the enclosure 28, flanges 50, 51 hold the belt 2 against vibrating table 17, excess flock being caught by wings 52, 53. The flock may be of nylon or rayon or may be replaced by metal powder.
