872,697. Sewing machines. PFAFF A. G., G. M. Sept. 9, 1958 [Sept. 9, 1957], No. 28834/58. Class 112 A series of spaced buttonholes are sewn in a workpiece by arranging two automatic buttonhole sewing machines with their heads facing each other and their needles arranged at a distance apart equal to the spacing between the nearest points of a pair of buttonholes of the series, feeding the material longitudinally of the buttonholes and sewing the latter in a conventional manner, and similarly sewing additional pairs of the series. Automatic buttonhole sewing machines 3 and 3a are arranged on a table 7 with their heads 10, 10a facing each other so as to sew a pair of buttonholes 4 simultaneously in material 1. The material is initially in taut condition and the needles 5, 5a are at the inner ends of the work clamps 2, 2a, whereby in sewing the first sides, the work bulges upwardly in the space between the machines. The table is formed with a longitudinal groove 8 which receives corresponding projections 12 on the bases 9, 9a of the machines.
