Abstract

A process for the production of aromatic polymers comprises polymerizing styrene and/or dinvinyl benzene in the presence of titanium dichloride as catalyst and in the absence of catalysts containing other metals. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of inert reaction media, e.g. pentane, hexane, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and cyclohexane. The styrene and divinylbenzene reaction masses may be dissolved in methyl ethyl ketone and p-xylene respectively and the polymers precipitated with methanol and acetone.
