Class 29 In ice making apparatus in which water flows down vertical tubes 2 disposed in an evaporator 1, the ice tubes or rods are thawed-off by stopping the compressor 14 and circulating the liquid refrigerant by pump 25 through the evaporator and a heater 22. As shown the heater is heated by water which has been used during the freezing cycle to cool the condenser 17 but, in a modification, the heater is the condenser itself. During freezing, refrigerant flows through expansion valve 20 to the lower evaporator chamber 9<SP>1</SP> whence it rises through pipes 6 closing surrounding tubes 2 to the upper evaporator chamber 9 connected to the compressor suction by pipe 15. The central evaporator chamber 8 is connected to' chambers 9, 9<SP>1</SP> through cocks 12, 13 open during icemaking. To thaw-off, the compressor is stopped and cocks 12, 13 are closed as are cocks 16, 19 which isolate the evaporator from the compressor and condenser; then pump 25 is then started and cocks 24, 27, 29 are opened. This causes liquid refrigerant to circulate from the chamber 8 and heater 22 through chamber 9<SP>1</SP>, pipes 6, chamber 9 and pipe 23 back to the heater to thaw-off the ice. Heater 22 may include an expansion compensator 31. Specification 566,667 is referred to.
