Abstract

871,885. Crimping pliers. AMP Inc. April 25, 1960 [April 27, 1959], No. 14351/60. Addition to 661,192. Class 61. In pliers provided with crimping dies 2, 4 in the jaws 6, 8 having faces 10, 12 which form stops limiting the closing of the dies, a pawl and ratchet are mounted between the handles 16, 18, the pawl operatively engaging the ratchet during the final closing of the dies and automatically disengaging from the ratchet with yielding movement in the mechanism beyond the point at which the stops abut and crimping is completed, the pawl remaining out of operative engagement with the ratchet during opening of the dies. The pawl reverses its direction of engagement with the ratchet upon disengagement from the ratchet and again reverses its direction upon movement of the handles to close the dies. As shown a ratchet 24 having teeth 28 is pivoted at 26 to the handle 18 and telescopes with a pawl carrier 30 pivoted at 36 to the handle 16. The pivoted pawl 22 is urged into the position shown in Fig. 1 by a spring 34. Pivoted to the handle pivot 20 is a shutter 38 and strap 40 both independently rotatable but spring biased either to a first position in which it obstructs the space between the dies and prevents removal of a crimped connector or to a second position shown in Fig. 1 in which the space is unobstructed. Fingers 54, 56 on the ratchet engage the shutter to cause it to move from the first to the second position during opening of the dies when the pawl is again in position to operatively engage the ratchet. In a modification, Fig. 5, the ratchet comprises a ratchet bar 70 and pawl 72 the bar being mounted to slide in a pawl carrier 74 as the handles 62, 64 are opened and closed. The ratchet bar is made up of a pair of outer plates 86, 88 and a central plate 90 having ratchet teeth 92. The outer plates are held apart by pins 96 which ride in slots 94 in the central plate 90. The slots 94 are inclined in the same direction as that adapted by the pawl during opening movement. The plate 90 is spring biased towards the pawl.
