Abstract
The process of the parent Specification for the production of diphenylamine is modified in that undiluted aniline vapour at a pressure between 100 and 200 lbs./sq. inch gauge is passed in continuous manner into a reaction chamber maintained at 400-550 DEG C. and containing a non-base-exchanging catalyst, such as activated alumina or titania, which has a surface area greater than 100 square metres per gram. A preferred catalyst may be obtained by precipitating alumina from sodium aluminate solution with acid, and igniting the alumina gel to form an amorphous non-cyrstalline alumina with a surface area of from 100 to 400 sq. metres per gram. In one example, aniline vapour at 445 DEG C. is passed continuously into a reaction chamber maintained at 480 DEG C. and containing activated alumina, and the product is passed to a condenser and thence to a storage tank. Feed rates of 2,0, 3,2 and 4,0 grams of aniline flowing per hour per c.c. of catalyst, and pressures from 100 to 140 lbs./sq. inch gauge are specified. The yields of diphenylamine obtained under various conditions of operation are indicated graphically.
