Abstract
871,416. Railway track brakes. WESTING- HOUSE AIR BRAKE CO. May 6, 1959 [June 6, 1958], No. 15484/59. Class 103 (1). In a railway car retarder of the track brake type wherein braking bars are located adjacent the track rail and are arranged to be moved into engagement with a part of the railway car for retarding the speed of the vehicle, braking bars 21 provided with removable brake shoes 22 are adapted to be moved into frictional contact with the railway vehicle wheel 24 by pressurization of fluid pressure cylinders 15a, 15b which extend substantially the whole length of the braking bar. Two types of fluid pressure cylinders are illustrated in Fig. 1; 15a shows a cylinder of rectangular shape receiving a rectangularshaped piston 17 and a moulded rubber fluid bellows 18. When the latter is supplied with compressed air through connection 19 the bellows expands to urge piston 17 and braking bar against the vehicle wheel 24. 15b shows a cylinder of elliptical shape provided with a similar shaped piston 28 and a cup-shaped rubber diaphragm 29 which at all times bears against the piston 28 and is secured to the body of the cylinder housing. The fluid pressure operated piston cylinder devices 15a, 15b and braking bars 21 are so arranged and proportioned that each braking bar is normally biased by gravity to the non-braking position. A plurality of retarder bars 21 and applying cylinders 15a, 15b are provided on both sides of the rail 10 as shown in Fig. 2.
