In charging coal into a chamber of a coke oven the coal is introduced in one vertical stream and at least two lateral streams which lateral streams flow in opposite directions at an angle, downwardly, in the longitudinal central plane of the chamber. Guides 2 below the charging, holes 1 of a coke oven chamber are shaped so as to reduce the velocity of coal falling into the oven as little as possible and are mounted at an angle to each other in the central plane of the chamber so as to divide the stream of coal into a vertical stream 4 and at least two lateral streams 5 in the central plane of the chamber inclined in opposite directions to the vertical. This results in a charge of high, substantially uniform bulk density.
