Abstract
870,814. Railway vehicle undercarriages; springs. METALASTIK Ltd. June 23, 1959 [Aug. 5, 1958], No. 25123/58. Classes 103(6) and 108(3). The body 5 Fig. 1 of a railway vehicle is supported from a transom 8 of a bogie frame 6 by side bearer assemblies 11, each comprising a rubber block 12 having bonded metal interleaves 30 Fig. 2, and end plates 31, which block acts mainly under compression but allows horizontal movement of the body relative to the frame mainly under shear, and an annular rubber spring 15 with metal interleaves and end ring members 14, 16, which latter spring carries the block 12 and permits vertical movements of the body relative to the frame, under shear, but resists transverse movements, under compression. The member 14 is the side wall of a cup carrying the block 12 and the cup together with the annular spring 15 constitute the deformable wall of a pneumatic spring having an air space 19 communicating through a hole 18 with an air chamber 17 in the frame 6. By controlling the air pressure in the space 19 the body is maintained at a constant level. If desired the cups 14 may be.connected by a rigid plank. In another embodiment the annular spring is replaced by a pneumatic cushion and a rigid plank interconnecting the cups is connected to longitudinal links in turn connected to the frame. Another embodiment (Fig. 4 not shown) discloses a block 12 mounted between upper and lower annular springs 15 the lower spring being inverted. The outer members 16 of the springs 15 are connected by a sleeve which serves as the chamber for the pneumatic spring. The body 5 is also connected to the bogie frame by a pin 9 and longitudinal link 10 in known manner.
