870,103. Friction clutches. SANDFORD, R. S., EATON, W. A., SEDERGREN, E. D., CASLER, R. H., and EAMES, J. O. Dec. 11, 1959 [Dec. 22, 1958], No. 42140/59. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXIV] In a friction member for a liquid-cooled brake or clutch, the friction member includes an annular body member 14 having a cavity 17 for cooling liquid supplied and discharged through conduits 22, 23, a separate metal friction element 18 detachably secured to the body member 14 and forming a wall for the cavity; there being resilient sealing rings (e.g. of rubber) 24a, 25a compressed between the inner face of the friction element 18 and the bottom of continuous grooves 24, 25 in the body member 14 whereby a respective liquid passage 28, 29 is provided connecting the respective groove 24, 25 and the cavity 17 for subjecting the sealing ring to the action of the cooling liquid in the cavity to prevent overheating of the resilient sealing rings 24a, 25a. In the disc brake, (Group XXXIV), shown, the non-rotatable annular friction member 14 is urged into frictional engagement with a composition friction element 8, secured to a rotatable member 5, by means of ,hydraulic fluid under pressure supplied through port 13.
