Abstract

Polymeric anhydrides and polymeric acyl halides of alpha-beta unsaturated carboxylic acids are prepared by reacting a salt having the structure: <FORM:0869867/IV (a)/1> wherein R represents hydrogen or a lower alkyl group, n is 1 or 2, and M represents an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, magnesium or beryllium, with a carbonyl halide having the formula:- <FORM:0869867/IV (a)/2> wherein b is 1 or 2 and X represents chlorine or bromine, to produce an anhydride, acyl halide or mixtures thereof, (the parent Specification in Group IV(b)), and polymerizing the product in the presence of a free-radical initiator, such as acetyl benzoyl peroxide, peracetic acid, hydroxyheptyl peroxide, isopropyl percarbonate, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, cyclohexanone peroxide, cyclohexyl hydroperoxide, 2, 4-dichlorobenzoyl peroxide, cumene hydroperoxide, t-butyl hydroperoxide, methyl amyl ketone peroxide, acetyl peroxide, lauroyl peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, methyl cyclohexyl hydroperoxide, t-butyl permaleic acid, t-butyl perbenzoate, di-t-butyl diperphthalate, t-butyl perphthalic acid, caprylyl peroxide, p-chlorobenzoyl peroxide, t-butyl peracetate, di-t-butyl peroxide, dibenzal diperoxide and azo-bis-isobutyronitrile, or ultra-violet, X-ray or nuclear radiation. Examples relate to the polymerization of acrylic or methacrylic anhydride or acrylyl or methacrylyl halide, either alone or in admixture, in solution in hexane or benzene. Other monomers such as vinyl acetate may be added before polymerization. The anhydride polymers form clear solutions when reacted with an excess of anhydrous ethanol or with 5% aqueous sodium hydroxide.
