A rolling gear tester for testing intermeshing toothed gear-wheels 38, 39 has rolling rulers 14, 15 in slip-free connection with the spindles of the two gear-wheels 38, 39 through base discs 12, 13 having diameters independent of the wheels to be tested, and longitudinal movements of the two rulers 14, 15 relative to one another are effected by means of a control ruler 19 mounted on a slide 2 and angularly adjustable thereon in accordance with the transmission ratio of the gears to be tested. The gear-wheels 38, 39 are mounted on spindles 5, 6, the spindle 5 being journalled in the machine bed 1 and the spindle 6 in an adjustable carriage 7, the position of which is indicated on a scale 10. The spindles 5, 6 carry discs 12, 13 which roll without slipping on the rulers 14, 15, the non-slip arrangement is produced electromagnetically by means of an electric circuit through coils in the discs. The rulers 14, 15 are guided for transverse and longitudinal movement respectively on the slide 2 and on the bed 1, by rollers 11, 24. A slider block 17 is pivotally connected to the ruler 14 and slides in a longitudinal groove formed in the control ruler 19 which latter can be clamped to the slide 2 at any desired angle by a clamp 23, the angle being indicated on a scale 21. A record drum 28 is mounted on the slide 2 and is rotated, by means of a gear running on a fixed rack 32, when the slide 2 is moved longitudinally. Relative movement between the slide 2 and the ruler 15 is recorded on the drum 28 by an arm 27 actuated by a lever 26 pivoted on the slide and with one end in a recess 25 in the ruler 15. In use, the control ruler 19 is adjusted to an angle determined by the sizes of the discs 12, 13 and the numbers of teeth on the gear-wheels 38, 39. The ruler 15 is then biased to one side or the other by one of two springs 34, 35, depending on which flank of the wheels it is desired to test. The handle 40, which may be replaced by an hydraulic or electric motor, is turned to move the slide 2, the ruler 14 moving transversely of the bed 1, and so driving the gearwheels 38, 39 and the ruler 15. If the ruler 19 is correctly adjusted and the teeth of the gears are also correct, there should be no relative movement between the slide 2 and the ruler 15, but any inaccuracies which may arise are recorded on the drum 28. If the control ruler 19 is adjusted in the opposite direction, an internallytoothed gear-wheel may be tested. A modification is also described in which bevel and hypoid gears can be tested. The electromagnetic couplings may be replaced by conventional steel bands.
