869,425. Casting processes. KABUSHIKIKAISHA NIHONDENSHI KOGAKU KENKYUSHO. Oct. 18, 1957 [Oct. 22, 1956], No. 32665/57. Class 83 (1). Apparatus for forming specimens for electron microscopes and the like, in the form of solid thin films comprises a melting crucible mounted in a sealed vessel and a specimen holder mounted on the vessel and operable from the outside so that a loop attached to the member may be dipped into molten material in the crucible and lifted therefrom to a distance at which adherent molten material spread across the loop, will solidify. The electrically-heated crucible 4 is mounted in a chamber 1 which may be evacuated or filled with an inert gas, on a shaft 7 for tilting from outside the chamber 13 is a crucible cover and 14 a thermocouple, both operable from outside the chamber. A rod 16 enters the chamber through a cylinder 15 and carries at its inner end a loop 17 which is inserted in the melt to pick up and extract a specimen in film form, Fig. 3. The specimen is withdrawn into the cylinder 15, whose inner end is then sealed by a cover 26 so that the cylinder may be opened to atmosphere through a valve 21 and the loop and specimen extracted without disturbance to the conditions in the chamber 1.
