Abstract

A method of isolating a solid in a finely <PICT:0869143/III/1> divided state from a solution or suspension of the solid by atomization and drying by means of a spray drier, comprises supplying the same liquid as constitutes the solvent or dispersion medium present in the solution or suspension in the form of saturated vapour to the zone of droplet formation, and passing the droplets so formed into the drying zone proper. The sprayed material may be a solution or suspension of a halogenated or sulphohalogenated polyolefine such as polypropylene or polyethylene or of a copolymer of the corresponding monomer in carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, methylene chloride or tetrachloroethane. In addition, polyvinyl chloride, a copolymer of vinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene or a copolymer of ethylene with propylene may also be present. In a preferred embodiment, the solution or suspension is supplied through a central bore 3 of a cylindrical body 2 to the mouth 4 of the nozzle. The same liquid as constitutes the solvent or dispersing medium present in the solution or suspension is supplied in the form of saturated vapour through the annular passage 6. The nozzle produces a spray cone 7 which is surrounded by a zone 8 of the vapour.
