Abstract

A resinous composition comprises an epoxide resin containing more than one epoxy group per molecule, a hardener for the epoxide resin and a disecondary amine having the formula R,NH,X, NH,R1 where X is a chain containing at least four atoms, and R and R1 are organic radicals which may be alike or different. Specified epoxide resins are those obtained by reacting polyhydric phenols, particularly diphenylol propane, with epoxy compounds such as epichlorhydrin and dichlorhydrin. Preferred hardeners are amines such as diethylene triamine and diamino diphenyl methane and adducts such as diethylene triamine-ethylene oxide adducts. Acid anhydrides and catalytic type hardeners are also referred to. Preferred disecondary amines are the reaction products of one mol of a diprimary amine and two mols of ethylene oxide or acrylonitrile. Other amines listed correspond to the above formula when R and R1 are selected from cyanoethyl, hydroxyethyl, hydroxypropyl, phenyl and allyl radicals and X represents a tetramethylene, hexamethylene, -C2H4O-C2H4-, <FORM:0868733/IV (a)/1> radical. In examples a liquid epoxide resin of epoxide equivalent 190 is hardened by mixing with (1) a diethylene triamine-ethylene oxide adduct hardener and as modifier a liquid reaction product of one mol of hexamethylene diamine and two mols of acrylonitrile; (2) diamino diphenyl methane and the same modifier; (3) the hexamethylene diamine-acrylonitrile reaction product, the mixture being heated up to 120 DEG C. Phthalic anhydride previously heated to 120 DEG C. is then added; (4) tetraethylene pentamine hardener and a modifier consisting of the reaction product of one mol of tetraethylene pentamine and five mols of acrylonitrile. Specifications 761,443 and 792,187 are referred to.
