Abstract
868,672. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. March 10, 1960 [March 11, 1959], No. 8503/59. Class 39(4). In a system for ventilating a reactor containment with air, air is withdrawn from the containment, passed to a receiver at a high pressure, and released to the atmosphere through a valve which opens at a certain pressure, and withdrawal of air is stopped if the radioactivity of the air reaches a certain lievel. The Figure shows a reactor shield forming an inner containment 2 and enclosed by a steel outer containment 8. Air is withdrawn through a filter by compressors 1 and passed through detectors for radioactivity and for loss of reactor coolant to a receiver 3; the air is released through a blow-off valve 4, an isolating valve, and a Na 2 CO 3 absorber tower to a stack. The activity of the outgoing air is monitored at 6 and the compressors are stopped if it reaches a certain value. Air is drawn into the outer containment by fans 9 and enters the inner containment through holes 27. A scavenging duct 23 is provided. The pressure in the inner containment is normally below that in the outer containment ; both are above atmospheric pressure.
