A worm gear 9 fast on the driving spindle 12 of an electric motor 11 is engaged either, as shown, with worm wheel teeth 4 2 on a wormwheel 4 or, by tilting the motor about pivots 16, with worm-wheel teeth 4 1 to give a lower ratio, the worm-wheel driving through a resilient coupling 8 and a one-way helical coil spring clutch 7 to a shaft 3 driving magnetic tape recording and/or reproducing apparatus. More than two rows of teeth 4 1 &c. may be provided.
