867,749. Pipe couplings; indicating leakages in couplings. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Dec. 11, 1959 [Dec. 12, 1958], No. 40208/58. Classes 99(1) and 99(2). In a releasable pipe coupling comprising members 1, 2 having complementary spigot and socket parts 4, 5 and locked together by means such as a nut 6, there is a ring seal between the spigot and socket, and at least one radial hole in the spigot located at a position intermediate the length of the spigot and nearer to the free end of the spigot than the position assumed by the seal when the spigot is fully engaged in the socket. As shown, the socket 2 has a flange 11 which bears on a shoulder 12 of the spigot 1, and the fluid seal which is housed in an annular recess 9 in the socket comprises a leather washer 7 and an 0-ring 8 of Neoprene. The radial hole allows the escape of fluid through the nut and thus gives an indication when the nut is insufficiently tightened.
