Abstract

A composite fireproof board consisting of a particle board, e.g. chipboard, having integrally bonded to one or both of its sides a layer of exfoliated vermiculite or like micaeous material, is made by spreading a layer of exfoliated material, admixed with adhesive, e.g. ureaformaldehyde resin, in a mould or on a caul plate, and spreading thereover a layer of chips admixed with the same or other adhesive, interposing, if desired, an intermediate layer of pure adhesive. Before pressing and curing, a further layer of the vermiculite/adhesive admixture may be spread over the chip layer, with or without an intermediate adhesive film. Alternatively, vermiculite/adhesive mixture may be applied to one or both sides of a ready-formed chipboard, with or without intermediate adhesive layers, and the whole pressed and cured.ALSO:In the production of a fireproof board one or both sides of a particle board, e.g. chipboard, are coated with layers of exfoliated micaceous material, e.g. exfoliated vermiculite, in admixture with an adhesive, e.g. ureaformaldehyde resin, and the whole is pressed and cured to bond the layers to the board; if desired intermediate layers of pure adhesive may be interposed between the board and the vermiculite/adhesive layers(s).
