867,542. Linear-dimension gauges; vernier equivalents. A.E.I. - JOHN THOMPSON NUCLEAR ENERGY CO. Ltd., SHEPHERD, G. H., and STAIT, D. P. March 6, 1958 [March 6, 1957], No. 7423/57. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XXXV] A micrometer screw gauge incorporates a magnetic circuit, the reluctance of which changes as part of the micrometer is rotated, together with means for counting the changes in reluctance. The spindle 1 of the micrometer carries a toothed wheel 4 and an annular element 6 embraced by a coil 7. An element 8 carrying fingers 10 is separated from the element 6 by an air gap 5 in which the teeth of wheel 4 rotate. An alternating current of some 4000 cycles/sec. is applied to the coil 7 and causes a flux to circulate in the magnetic circuit 6, 8, 10. If one of the teeth of wheel 4 is coincident with a finger 10, a maximum flux will occur in that finger and will induce a voltage in a coil 13 mounted thereon. The number of pulses is counted by a known counter and a vernier indication is given by the relative magnitude of the voltages induced in the other coils 13.
