Abstract
867,496. Waveguide mode suppressors. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Feb. 26, 1960 [March 3, 1959], No. 7317/59. Class 40(8) A waveguide mode-filter for suppressing undesired high-order modes comprises a thin layer of magnetically lossy material supported in a region of the waveguide where the magnetic field component of a desired low-order mode is negligible and that of an undesired higher-order mode is close to its maximum intensity. As shown, a lossy magnetic cylinder 2 of radius 0À628R is supported by foamed polystyrene members 3, 4 within a circular waveguide 1 of radius R intended for propagation of the H 01 mode. The longitudinal field of the H 02 mode approaches its maximum intensity in the region of the magnetic cylinder and fields due to the H 03 and other modes of higher order have non- zero intensities in the same region. The cylinder 2 may be a solid piece of nickel-zinc ferrite or may be formed by winding magnetic recording tape around the inner support 4. Alternatively, it may be formed by painting the surface of either of the supports 3. 4 with a slurry containing powdered ferrite. The layer may be permanently magnetized or biased by an external field.
