Abstract
867,407. Electric hot plates. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Sept. 17, 1959 [Sept. 26, 1958], No. 30829/58. Class 39(3). In an electric hot plate of the sheathed wire type wherein 'the heating means consists of one or more lengths of metallic tubing containing coiled heating resistance wire embedded in insulating material, the heating surface of the hot plate is provided by a plurality of lengths or part lengths of heating element disposed side by side and attached together by high temperature brazing. The heating element may be wound in a spiral 1, Fig. 1, of one length or three lengths of sheathed wire in parallel, and the hot plate can be circular, rectangular or triangular. The hot plate surface may be plane or curved and is carried by a spider 5 welded or brazed to some only of the turns of the heating element. The spider legs are strips of heat resisting material such as "Inconel" (Registered Trade Mark) and the sheath of the wire is also of this material. The brazing material may or may not completely fill the crevices of the hot plate and in the former case after brazing the hot plate is machined to provide a plane or curved surface of accurate form. The outer ends of the spider engage in a reflector, drip plate or heat absorbing dish. The spiral is made by winding the sheathed wire on a conical former and squashing it between plates or bars after which the adjacent turns are brazed together. The brazing material is Ni-Cr alloy and brazing is carried out at 1050‹C.-1200‹C. in dry hydrogen or in a vacuum. The spider may be replaced by three or more stub arms or is integral with the cooker. The outer turn of the spiral may be of increased loading and/or of decreased heat emissivity to get equal temperature over the hot plate and a cap fits in the centre of the spiral.
