Abstract
867,153. Screw-threads. ELASTIC STOP NUT CORPORATION OF AMERICA. May 13, 1959 [June 9, 1958], No. 16462/59. Class 80 (3). [Also in Groups XXII and XXV] In a method of forming an external thread in a metal body, e.g. a screw, a high tensile bolt or a stud having a high fatigue resistance, the thread-form inwardly of the pitch cylinder is rolled while the remainder of the thread is freely extruded outwardly beyond the pitch cylinder. A unified thread is formed by dies 36, Fig. 4, with differently-inclined flank portions 40, 44 and a dimension from root 42 to crest 38 greater than that of the thread to be formed. A rolled or coined surface is produced below the pitch-line while metal is freely extruded, i.e. without touching the walls of die cavities 46 to form a portion 47 which may be subsequently ground or otherwise machined to the finished form. In a modification, Fig. 5, a thread form is produced having flank portions 57 with an included angle of 70 degrees and flank portions 59 with an included angle of 60 degrees, this thread being more easily formed with existing machining tools than a 60 degree thread. Prior to threading the blank may be hardened to above 37 Rockwell C and preferably between 42 and 53 Rockwell C to produce a high tensile bolt.
