Abstract

866,750. Locomotives. NAPIER & SON Ltd., D. July 3, 1959 [April 3, 1958], No. 10933/58. Classes 79(1) and 79(2). A railway locomotive includes a reciprocating internal combustion engine operating as a pressure gas generator and a gas turbine driven by the gas so produced driving each driven wheel axle. The internal combustion engine 10 may comprise three cylinders at the corners of an equilateral triangle, each cylinder having two pistons connected to different crank-shafts, one co-operating with inlet ports and the other with exhaust ports. A compressor 11 may be mounted within the space surrounded by the cylinders driven by the crank-shafts, or additionally or alternatively the compressor may be driven by an exhaust turbine. Each axle has its own gas turbine 18 which may be supplied from a common chamber or from two chambers 29, 30 and ducts 27, 28 as shown. The locomotive may have four driven axles on two bogies, as shown, or six driven axles, and the axes of the gas turbines may be parallel to the axle or in a fore-and-aft direction. Each wheel axle is independently sprung and the gas turbines are mounted on the locomotive frame and connected to the axles by reversing and reducing gears 19, each having a short propeller shaft 20 and universal joints 21 and a further reduction gear and bevels 22, 23, 14.
