Abstract

866,746. Electric generators. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 3, 1958 [Feb. 4, 1957], No. 3777/57. Class 35. In a dynamo-electric generator having an electrical power output winding comprising hollow conductors containing cooling liquid passageways, the passageways in circumferentially separated conductors are connected together through heat exchangers 11, Fig. 1, at positions which in operation of the generator are at equal electrical potentials, and the passageways are arranged to provide two sideby-side cooling liquid paths 2, 3 which are joined together at one end to form a continuous cooling liquid circuit outgoing along one path 2 and returning along another 3. As shown, the heat exchangers 11 are provided at the winding coil noses and comprise, Fig. 2, tubes 15, 16 whose transfer area is increased by coils (not shown) of coiled wire. Applied to an alternator star-connected stator winding the paths are joined together at the phase end 5 and the liquid is introduced and discharged at the neutral end 4 where a pump 8, cooler 9 and reservoir 10 maintain liquid circulation via an inlet 6 and an outlet 7. The liquid may be oil or distilled water, a fan (not shown) may circulate a gas such as hydrogen over the heat exchangers, and the conductors may be Roebel-type transposed bars.
