Abstract

866,314. Packaging machines. OLLIER, J. H. G., GROSSHANS, G. F., and MASSON, R. G. June 26, 1958 [June 29, 1957], No. 20527/58. Class 94(1). In a machine for making containers from bands of thermoplastic material, the devices for heating, forming, welding and cutting-out the material are adjustably mounted on bars 9 to admit of alteration to suit the manufacture of different containers. The devices are accurately positioned by a graduated scale on the machine. The devices may be duplicated. The material 3 may be a vinyl chloride, a polyethylene, or a polyamide, is heated at station CH by infra red rays, is formed in a mould by a vacuum at station PF, is filled from a device 19, has a lid of material 4 applied at station PS, and is cut from the sheet at station PD and ejected as a package 7 through a shoot 24. The lid may be sealed with the package under vacuum or filled with gas, and may have a handle. Part 14 at each station PF, PS, and PD is in the form of an elongated ring and moves vertically on rods 15 by pneumatic jacks towards and away from the material. At station CH movable screens control the amount of the material that is softened, the screens may be water cooled. A device Ti draws the material forward step by step by means of a pneumatic jack, rollers 28, 29 being moved apart on the return stroke by electro-magnetic means. If the material carries an inscription this may operate a photo-electric cell to control the step-by-step movement of the material.
