Abstract
A low thermal expansion ceramic body comprising petalite and 1-10% by weight as the oxide of an alkaline earth metal oxide or silicate or an alkaline earth metal compound which decomposes to the oxide below 1100 DEG C., is fired at 1100 DEG C. to 1330 DEG C. The compounds added may be the carbonates, nitrates, sulphates of Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba or minerals such as talc, dolomite, limestone, periclase, witheute, wollastonite, aragonite and brucite. The finely ground components are made into a slip with demineralised water Na2CO3 and Na2SiO3 and slip cast to shape and fired to convert the petalite into a solid solution of silica and beta-spodumene. A lubricant such as polyethylene glycol may be added to the raw materials and shaping effected by pressing.
