Abstract

C2-4 2-alkyl nitrates are prepared by first absorbing an appropriate alkylene in sulphuric acid in known manner to form a product consisting of at least one alkyl ester of sulphuric acid wherein the ester group is in the 2-position and then continuously reacting the resulting sulphuric ester product with nitric acid at a temperature sufficient to continuously remove the 2-alkyl nitrate formed in the reaction, by introducing said sulphuric ester product continuously into a bulk of hot aqueous nitric acid containing a stabiliser consisting of a compound capable of destroying any nitrous acid formed in the reaction medium and, if desired, also containing sulphuric acid, to which nitric acid is being continuously fed, while the resulting 2-alkyl nitrate is being continuously removed by distillation along with dilute nitric acid. The stabiliser is preferably urea or urea in conjunction with ammonium nitrate. The examples describe the preparation of ethyl, isopropyl and 2-butyl nitrates.
